Standard Rogue Report 5/30/13 MTGO Standard Results

When you don’t have a ton of money to play Standard, it pays to keep your eyes out for decks that are inexpensive yet effective. In browsing the tournament results of the MTGO daily on 5/31/13 and came across a Green/Black control deck that went 3-1 and bears some resemblance to my version posted here.

2 [mtg_card]Golgari Guildgate[/mtg_card]
4 [mtg_card]Overgrown Tomb[/mtg_card]
14 [mtg_card]Swamp[/mtg_card]
4 [mtg_card]Woodland Cemetery[/mtg_card]
4 [mtg_card]Desecration Demon[/mtg_card]
3 [mtg_card]Disciple of Bolas[/mtg_card]
4 [mtg_card]Geralf’s Messenger[/mtg_card]
1 [mtg_card]Griselbrand[/mtg_card]
4 [mtg_card]Thragtusk[/mtg_card]
3 [mtg_card]Abrupt Decay[/mtg_card]
1 [mtg_card]Deadbridge Chant[/mtg_card]
3 [mtg_card]Devour Flesh[/mtg_card]
2 [mtg_card]Murder[/mtg_card]
4 [mtg_card]Mutilate[/mtg_card]
1 [mtg_card]Putrefy[/mtg_card]
3 [mtg_card]Sign in Blood[/mtg_card]
3 [mtg_card]Tragic Slip[/mtg_card]

2 [mtg_card]Curse of Death’s Hold[/mtg_card]
4 [mtg_card]Deathrite Shaman[/mtg_card]
1 [mtg_card]Devour Flesh[/mtg_card]
3 [mtg_card]Duress[/mtg_card]
3 [mtg_card]Golgari Charm[/mtg_card]
2 [mtg_card]Sever the Bloodline[/mtg_card]

This is a solid deck, and I think I’ll put it together tonight. The only thing I am missing are the [mtg_card]Thragtusk[/mtg_card]s which are important for two reasons: 1)Life, and 2) a creature post [mtg_card]Mutilate[/mtg_card]. There really isn’t a replacement that does both of those things, so the deck is significantly weaker without Thragtusks, but you can manage a cheapie version with [mtg_card]Phylactery Lich[/mtg_card] if you are willing to run [mtg_card]Prophetic Prism[/mtg_card] in place of [mtg_card]Sign in Blood[/mtg_card].

Some small tweaks–I’d run 1x [mtg_card]Demonic Rising[/mtg_card]. It’s perfect in this deck, and provides easy advantage after a board clear (especially with a Thragtusk on the board). Further, [mtg_card]Deadbridge Chant[/mtg_card] WILL trigger with Ground Seal in play, so it is a solid sideboard option against reanimator/[mtg_card]Snapcaster Mage[/mtg_card].

Great deck. If Thraggy sticks around for M14, I’m definitely building this one.

Hat’s off to Razorfin Gazza for putting it together.
